Non-Profit Dishes Out Soup With Bowls of Hope

Raises Nearly $50K for Services

Thousand Oaks, CA- Nov 08, 2006 The weather was perfect, the soup was tasty, and hearts were warmed. Many came out to support Many Mansions’ 2nd Bowls of Hope Project on Sunday November 5th at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu and what a wonderful event it was.

More than 600 people attended Sunday’s event as host Jean Martirez of the Fox 11 Morning News assisted Many Mansions in raising nearly a record $50,000 for their Services Department. Over 700 bowls were created by local amateur and professional artists and were displayed at the entrance of the event for guests to take home as a reminder of the day. Many Mansions' Executive Director Rick Schroeder and the melodic sounds of Beach Boys' keyboardist Michael Meros greeted event-goers as they proceeded to the soup line.

"It was wonderful to see everyone come together for a great cause," said event-goer Ora Weisman."The bowls served a great purpose and when I chose my bowl it truly gave me a sense of hope."

Guests were served by the organization’s sponsors and supporters, which included County of Ventura Supervisor Linda Parks, City of Thousand Oaks Councilmember Jaqui Irwin, and City of Westlake Village Councilmember Phillipa Klessig. The Los Angeles Laker Girls, National Charity League, and Girl Scout Troop 929 gracefully served additional bread and beverages in support of Many Mansions.

While guests enjoyed a simple meal of delicious soups provided by 18 supporters and local restaurants, they swayed to the beat of Conejo Community Drum Circle, local band Country Gone Awry and the piano students of Carol Rivken.

The event showcased an art gallery that featured artwork from children grades K-12 throughout the Conejo and San Fernando Valleys. Jack Boyd of Horizon Hills Elementary, Yancy Walden of First Baptist Academy, and Gavin Smith of the Art Den/Thousand Oaks High School were named 1st Place Winners in the Art Show.

Guests browsed in the Merchant Market, which displayed over 100 items including a variety of art, home dιcor, lavish gift baskets, trips and autographed memorabilia. Signed memorabilia included bowls from players of the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Laker Girls, Actor James Lesure of NBC’s TV Series Las Vegas, actor J. August Richards of the TV series Conviction and former co-star of the TV-series Angel, and an autographed basketball from Corey Magette of the Los Angeles Clippers. Well-known artist Dean Williams featured a live charcoal drawing from his new Black Cowboy Series that was also up for bid in the merchant market. Russ Watson, Housing and Redevelopment Manager of the City of Thousand Oaks, was the winner of a 5-night stay at the luxurious Hyatt Regency in Maui with airfare for two and a rental car donated by Great Hawaii Vacations.

The event was attended by former Baywatch co-star Donna D’errico, Zack Silva of the TV-series Desire, and B95.1 FM Hosts Bo and Juanita.

Both the people serving and coordinating and those who made donations and participated displayed lots of enthusiasm and support for the cause," said Eric Rhodes, Many Mansions' Vice-president & Director of Housing Management. "There was definitely a stronger spirit of awareness this year and more coherent sense of the many coming together to help the less fortunate via this occasion."

Proceeds from the event will benefit Many Mansions’ Services Department, which provides life-enriching and supportive services to resident children and adults. Services include the After- school Homework/Literacy Program, Teen Club, the Holiday Gift Program, Camp Many Mansions, On-site Service Coordination, Case Management, Emergency Food Assistance and more.
