Vietnam veterans, advocates of affordable housing and local politicians gathered Wednesday morning in Oxnard to celebrate the groundbreaking of an upcoming project that will house Ventura County low-income veterans.

Many Mansions, a Thousand Oaks-based provider of affordable housing and services, will begin construction on the Oxnard property next month, with an estimated completion date of May 2019. The project, Ormond Beach Villas at 5527-5567 Saviers Road, will include 40 units for veterans and their families. Read more

LOCAL VOLUNTEERS FILL HEARTS WITH BOWLS OF HOPE

The Conejo Valley and its environs are wonderful places to live, but finding affordable housing for our homeless and low-income residents is often an issue. In fact, the dearth of affordable housing in our area has been an ongoing topic of discussion for nearly 40 years.

In early 1979, Frank Schillo called Thousand Oaks civic leaders together to try to find a solution to the high cost of housing here. Representatives of city government, business and faith communities, service clubs, nonprofits and others gathered to discuss ways of meeting the housing challenges.

A low-cost car-sharing service offered by General Motors will be available to residents of two Many Mansions affordable-housing locations. CHUCK KIRMAN/THE STAR

A car-sharing program launched Thursday at two of Many Mansions’ Thousand Oaks properties will allow residents to rent a vehicle for a small fee.

Maven, a car-sharing program created by General Motors, opened with a new Chevrolet Cruze at the shared parking lot at Many Mansions’ Esseff Village and Villa Garcia apartments at 1425 Thousand Oaks Blvd. Residents will be able to rent the vehicle for $8 an hour, gas and insurance included.

Apartments will be in Oxnard

A Thousand Oaks-based nonprofit provider of affordable housing has received over $5 million from the state to build 40 apartments for homeless veterans.

Many Mansions is scheduled to complete the project in Oxnard by January.

Along with $5.6 million from the state Department of Housing and Community Development, the nonprofit received $800,000 from the city of Oxnard’s Housing Authority and another $210,000 from the county for the project.

Two local nonprofits received California’s Nonprofit of the Year award during a ceremony in Sacramento last month.

Affordable housing developer Many Mansions and Conejo Schools Foundation, an education and social service organization, were among about 100 California nonprofits to be honored by state politicians. Leaders from both organizations were flown to Sacramento for a celebratory lunch and tour of the Senate floor. Additionally, all honored nonprofits received plaques to commemorate their ongoing service.

In 1979, community members of Thousand Oaks came together in response to the housing crisis plaguing their neighbors, especially those who were becoming homeless or being forced to live in overcrowded, run-down, and crime-ridden housing.

These individuals represented a wide segment of Thousand Oaks, including the faith community, social services agencies, businesses, local government and concerned citizens.

Their initial efforts led to the establishment of Many Mansions in Ventura County, which owns and operates 500 units in 14 affordable housing complexes in Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley and Oxnard.
